What is
Forest Immersion?
Forest immersion (aka forest bathing or forest therapy) is inspired by the Japanese practice of "Shinrin Yoku", which involves spending time in a natural environment to promote physical and mental health. When we feel stressed or anxious our bodies release cortisol, a hormone linked to several chronic health issues. Numerous research studies have shown that spending time in a forest setting decreased participant's cortisol levels.
Forest immersion walks go further by activating your senses through small interactions with your surroundings. The format of the walk allows you freedom to modify the experience for what feels most comfortable and inviting. The natural surroundings set the mood and the guide simply "opens doors" along the way. The goal of a walk is to help your body and mind find relaxation, balance, creativity, or whatever you need in the moment.

Forest Immersion FAQs
What happens during a forest immersion walk?
A forest immersion walk involves taking a slow, meditative walk through a natural setting. The guide's role is to offer invitations or ways for attendees to interact with the natural surroundings and to help them slow down, both physically and mentally. The walk will consist of an introduction by the guide, several invitations/activities to encourage relaxation, an optional opportunity to share about the experience with fellow attendees, and wrap up with a shared snack.
How long does a walk last?
A forest immersion walk can vary between 1.5 to 3 hours, but my typical community walks last 2 hours. Please note that the distance traveled is usually less than 2 miles and attendees may spend 10 to 20 minutes walking slowly or sitting in one spot so forest immersion is not like a hike or other active outdoor activities.
For those curious about forest immersion as a staff wellness offering, these walks can be used for team building, added into a staff retreat, or help boost your team's creativity. Trial walks lasting 45 minutes to 1 hour are also available, upon request.
What size group do you allow on a walk?
Community group walks require a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 attendees. Please contact me directly to discuss scheduling a walk for larger groups: ViburnumFI@gmail.com.
How much does a walk cost?
A 2-hour community walk costs $30 per person. Please contact me for rates for larger groups.
What will the guide provide?
The guide will bring sit pads, hand sanitizer, sunblock, a first aid kit, and some snacks available. The guide is also certified in CPR and Wilderness First Aid, should a need arise.
What should I wear/bring?
Dress in extra layers and bring a warm jacket/hat/gloves
Sunglasses and a hat
Water and personal snack
A portable chair (if sitting on the ground is not preferable)
An epi pen or any other vital medicine
A journal (optional)
A blanket (optional, for warmth or laying down)
An open and welcoming attitude
Will the walk be canceled in inclement weather?
The walk may be canceled in the event of hard rain, temperatures below 40°F, or other hazardous conditions. After you register, the guide will contact you if inclement weather requires any changes to the walk.
